Baptism, 1st Communion and Confirmation Instructions
Letter from Bishop Dolan to Fr. Minh
June 11, 2020
From the Office of the Vicar General
Dear Pastors,
A few questions have been raised regarding the Initiation Sacraments in light of the re-opening procedures. These answers apply immediately for those in San Diego County.
Baptism of Children
While baptisms are encouraged, pews must be marked to prevent social distancing violations and all must wear masks. Parents and godparents may be allowed to approach the baptismal font. During the baptism, water shall be poured from a pitcher and not drawn from the font.
Anointing of the breast and/or head of the child may include a cotton swab and/or hands must be sanitized after each baptism.
Group photos are discouraged.
First Communion
The procedure to offer communion to the assembly will remain in effect. The exception is for the First communicants who will receive directly after the priest. Priests over 65 are encouraged not to offer communion to the communicants. Children may receive without the mask. Individual photos are encouraged at the reception of communion or after. Group photos after are discouraged.
Confirmation
Because the rule of 100 members or 25% capacity (whichever is less) is still in place, parents may be asked to act as proxy in order to allow for more immediate family members to attend. Sponsor or proxies are not to place their hands on the shoulders of the candidates.
If confirmation is delegated to you by the Bishop, pastors are to use cotton swabs per candidate. Swabs may be gathered and burned.
Group photos are discouraged.
Please know that you are all in my prayers!
Sincerely in the Lord,
Most Reverend John P Dolan
Vicar General
